Hamilton Ohio Obituary Search
Hamilton obituary and death records are managed through the Hamilton City Health Department and the Butler County Health Department. The city health department has an online portal for ordering death certificates for deaths within Hamilton city limits since 1913. Butler County handles the rest of the county from its office in Hamilton. Whether you need a certified death certificate or want to look up an old obituary, the resources are split between city, county, and state offices. The Ohio Obituary Index and other statewide tools can help fill in what the local offices don't have online yet.
Hamilton Overview
Butler County Obituary Records
Hamilton is the county seat of Butler County. Most county offices for records are right in Hamilton. The Butler County Health Department at 301 S. 3rd Street handles birth and death certificates for the county from 1909 on. You can also use VitalChek for faster ordering. The Butler County Clerk of Courts at 315 High Street, 5th Floor keeps court records and marriage licenses.
For older records, the Butler County Probate Court holds historical birth and death records from 1867 to 1908. Those early records are handwritten entries in ledger books, kept before Ohio started statewide registration. Under Ohio Revised Code Chapter 3705, the state took over death record registration in December 1908. But the probate courts still hold the pre-1908 records, and they are important for genealogy work on Hamilton families from that era.
Note: Do not confuse Hamilton the city (in Butler County) with Hamilton County (which contains Cincinnati). They are different places with different record offices.

Hamilton Health Department Death Records
The Hamilton City Health Department has an online portal for ordering death certificates. It covers deaths within Hamilton city limits from 1913 to the present. The address of death must fall within city limits for this office to have the record.
| Office | Hamilton City Health Department |
|---|---|
| Online Portal | hamiltonoh.permitium.com |
| County Office | Butler County Health Department 301 S. 3rd Street, Hamilton, OH 45011 |
| County Phone | 513-863-1770 |
The online portal lets you search and order from home. The system asks for the name of the deceased, the date of death, and your payment details. Ohio Revised Code Section 3705.23 gives the local registrar the authority to issue certified copies. Anyone can request a death certificate, though you need to provide your identity and a reason for the request. Social Security numbers are blacked out for the first five years after death unless you prove you are close family.
For births, you go through the Butler County Health Department rather than the city. Their office handles birth records for the entire county. Call 513-863-1770 to ask about their process and current fees.

The Ohio Obituary Index run by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is a free online tool with over 3.7 million obituary entries from newspapers across Ohio. Butler County records are in the index. You search by name, and the results tell you which newspaper and library holds the original obituary so you can request a copy. This is one of the best starting points for Hamilton obituary research because it covers small local papers that are not digitized elsewhere.
FamilySearch at familysearch.org has free digital images of Ohio death certificates from 1908 to 1953. You can view these online with a free account. The site also has county-level death records, birth records, and marriage records for many Ohio counties including Butler County. These collections are indexed and searchable by name.
How to Search Hamilton Obituaries Online
The Ohio Death Record Index from the Ohio History Connection is free and covers 1913 to 1944 and 1954 to 1970. Enter a name and year of death to search. A match gives you a certificate number for ordering a copy. There is a gap in the online index for 1945 to 1953, but those records exist on microfilm at the archives in Columbus and can be viewed on FamilySearch.
For recent Hamilton obituaries, local newspapers publish death notices on their websites. The Hamilton Journal-News and other Butler County papers carry obituaries for the area. These are usually available online for a few weeks to a few months after publication. For older obituaries, the library's microfilm collections and the Ohio Obituary Index are your best options.
The Ohio Department of Health has death records from 1971 onward. You can order online for $21.50 per record. Section 3705.24 of the Ohio Revised Code sets that fee, and it applies even if no record is found. The state office moved to 4200 Surface Road in Columbus. Allow about three weeks for delivery after you place an online order.
